General Headset FAQs

1. How do I pick up the call when using a headset?
To take a call on a telephone without a headset button, you have to remove the handset from the hookswitch for the duration of the call. To hang up, place the handset on hookswitch. Some telephones can be programmed to dedicate a button for headset use. Headset and on-hook dialing are features of the telephone, not the headset. Contact your dealer for further information.

2. If I disconnect the Quick Disconnect plug on the headset cord, do I get disconnected?
If you need to walk away from the telephone in a conversation, you can disconnect the black Quick Disconnect plug on the headset cord without being disconnected from your call.

3. How do I connect the headset to my telephone and telephone system?
Remove the handset cord from the telephone and connect the headset cord to the socket in the telephone. If you would like to be able to use both handset and headset, you need an amplifier or a DanaSwitch (a GN Netcom accessory that enables you to switch between your headset and handset). Please contact your dealer for information.

4. Can I use my headset on other telephones and telephone systems?
When you buy a headset, the dealer ensures that the headset is compatible with your telephone. To use the same headset on different telephones, you need a multi-purpose amplifier, or one of our cordless solutions.

5. Are GN Netcom headsets manufactured with materials that might cause an allergic reaction with some people?
No, Our headsets are made of materials that do not cause allergic reactions.

6. Can using a headset damage my hearing?
All GN Netcom headsets have Automatic Gain Control with a Quick Cut feature that protects your hearing from sudden, unexpected blasts of volume, like those caused by accidentally dialing a fax machine and modem.

Multi-Purpose Headset Amplifiers

1. My headset is beeping, during calls and after I hang up (MPA II only).
The beeping tone in an MPA II indicates that the batteries are either low or not needed. First, try removing the batteries. (Access the battery compartment by sliding the plate on the top of the amplifier to the left.) If the MPA II works without batteries, leave the batteries out. If the amplifier doesn't,t work without batteries, insert two new AA alkaline batteries.

2. There is no sound in my headset (speaker).
Check the connection at the Quick Disconnect plug. Then make sure that the headset amplifier is connected to the correct port on the telephone. Check that the headset/handset switch is in "headset" position and that your telephone handset is in the "off" hook position (if needed). Finally, check that the batteries are firmly seated in the battery compartment or replace the batteries with two new AA alkaline batteries. If there is still no sound in your headset, review the Set-Up section in the user guide. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

3. There is no sound in my handset.
Check that the modular plug for the handset is completely inserted into the proper port on the back of the amplifier. Then make sure that the headset/handset switch is in "handset" position.

4. My headset is not loud enough; I can't hear the person on the other end.
The MPA II and MP-10A are equipped with a sliding volume control, which controls the sound level in your headset. Adjust the volume via the slide bar on the face of the amplifier to the appropriate level.

5. The person on the other end can't hear me at all.
First check that you haven't inadvertently pressed the mute button. Then make sure that the headset/handset switch is in "headset" position. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

6. The person on the other end can barely hear me.
To adjust your headset's transmit level with the MPA II, disconnect it from the telephone and remove the battery lid by sliding it to the left. Then adjust the rotary dial, (factory setting is 5), upwards until the appropriate level is reached. Check the MPA II Set-Up Card, which lists the optimum microphone level for the most commonly-used telephones.

The volume for the MP-10A is located underneath the battery lid. It is a sliding volume control located above the DIP switches. Adjust the dial until the appropriate level is reached.

You can also try having the person on the other end turn up the volume on his/her headset or telephone.

7. How can I prolong the life of the batteries in the MPA II/MP-10A?
Depending upon the quality of the batteries you use, and how much you use the MPA II or MP-10A, you can expect the batteries to last approximately six months. The MPA II has a battery save feature, which automatically puts the MPA II to "sleep" after a specified period of inactivity. However, certain noises, such as from an air-conditioner, could "wake-up" the MPA II. If you work in such an environment, put the headset/handset switch in "handset" position when you are finished working. This will increase the battery's life.

To extend the life of the batteries in the MP-10A, put the # 7 DIP switch, located in the battery compartment, in the down position.

An external AC Power Adapter is also available which will eliminate the need for batteries.

8. Can I connect an external power adapter to my MPA II or MP-10A?
Yes, The MPA II and the MP-10A can be connected to an external 3-10V-power adapter, connected to the DC plug on the back of the amplifier base. You can purchase one from your local distributor or reseller.

In-Line Amplifier

1. There is no sound in my headset (speaker).
Make sure that your amplifier is plugged into the phone with the modular plug (please check your instruction guide for details), and make sure your Quick Disconnect is connected. You can also try adjusting the volume wheel on your in-line amplifier, and find out whether or not your phone needs to be off-hook to get a dial tone. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

2. My headset is not loud enough; I can't hear the person on the other end.
If your in-line amplifier is equipped with a volume control, raise the volume to an appropriate level. If your telephone is equipped with a volume control, it may help to adjust this upwards as well. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

3. The person on the other end can't hear me at all.
If your in-line amplifier is equipped with a mute button, make sure it isn't in the "on" (muted) position. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

4. The person on the other end can barely hear me.
Try having the person on the other end turn the volume up on his/her headset or telephone. If this doesn,t help, you may need to buy a Multi-Purpose Amplifier. Please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information.

Headset Tops

1. There is no sound in my headset (speaker).
If your headset is new and doesn't work when connected to your telephone, check the connection between the headset and the telephone. If you don't have on-hook dialing, make sure that your handset has been removed from the hookswitch. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

2. My headset isn't loud enough; I can't hear the person on the other end.
Try raising the volume control on your telephone. If that doesn't help, you probably need an amplifier to increase the volume and improve the sound quality. GN Netcom offers a number of different solutions. See the Headset products area of our web site, or contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

3. The person on the other end can't hear me at all.
If the headset is new and doesn't work when connected to your telephone, the first thing to do is check your connections. If the connections are good, it may either be that the microphone type in the headset doesn't match the microphone in the telephone, or that you need a different headset cord. If this is the case, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

4. The person on the other end can barely hear me.
Try having the person on the other end turn up the volume on his/her headset or telephone. Also, try raising the outgoing volume control on your telephone and headset. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

MPA Satellite

1. There is no sound in my headset (speaker).
Check that all cords and jacks are connected as shown in the User Guide. Make sure the Quick Disconnect is fully inserted into the beltpack, and that the A/C Adapter is plugged in and has power. Check that the On/Off button is in the ON position and the ON LED is lit. Also, be certain that the battery is properly installed in the beltpack and that it has been charged overnight.

2. My headset isn't loud enough; I can't hear the person on the other end.
Adjust the volume control on the beltpack until you reach a comfortable level. If your telephone is equipped with a volume control, turn the level up. If you are using the headset in a noisy environment, you can put an ear cushion over the speaker to help block out ambient room noise. You may also need to use a binaural (dual-speaker) headset model. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

3. The person on the other end can't hear me at all.
Check that the headset is correctly connected to the remote unit. Make sure that the MUTE on the beltpack is off (mute LED not lit up) and that the battery is fully charged. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

4. The person on the other end can barely hear me.
Try re-adjusting the transmit level by adjusting the transmit (TX) volume wheel on the back of the base. Make sure that the MUTE on the beltpack is off (mute LED not lit up). Check the position of the headset microphone, make sure it is placed at the corner of your mouth.

5. My headset/handset is buzzing/howling.

Buzzing:
The Satellite is too close to your phone. Move the base unit away from your telephone. If this doesn't help, please contact your local distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

Howling:
Either your transmit control is too high for your phone, or your phone's volume control is too high. Try adjusting one or both controls down to an adequate level.

6. I can hear my own voice in my speaker.
This is normal. It,s called "the sidetone signal". If you think the sidetone signal is too loud: Fine-tune your signal by adjusting the transmit (TX) control wheel at the rear of the base to a lower setting. Turn down the volume of your telephone if it is equipped with a volume control.

7. My headset is beeping when the system is on.
The beeping tone indicates that the batteries need recharging. Place the beltpack into the base to recharge the batteries.

Cellular or Cordless Headset

1. How do I connect a headset to a cellular phone?
Headsets connect to cellular and cordless telephones equipped with headset ports by inserting the 2.5-mm or 3.5-mm plug from the headset or headset adapter into the headset port on the telephone. (The size of the plug needed is determined by the size of the telephone port.) Be certain the connection is secure for proper use.

If you have a hands-free kit installed in your car, you have another connection possibility. However, special wiring is required. Please contact your local cellular distributor or reseller for further information and assistance.

Computer Telephony Integration (CTI)

1. How do I connect a headset to a computer?
Solutions vary depending on the hardware of your computer and telephone systems. The most common application uses the computer's soundboard. With this set-up, the headset is attached to the soundboard via microphone input and receiver output jacks, usually 3.5-mm stereo jacks.

GN Netcom's computer headset/cord is terminated with a 2x3,5-mm jack marked with a microphone icon and a loudspeaker icon. Connect the microphone plug to the computer's microphone port and the receiver plug to the computer's loudspeaker port.
